Contact lenses.
Developments
in the materials with which contact lenses are made means that nowadays
they can suit almost all patents, whatever their refractive defect.
Presbyopia (tired
eyesight in patients older than 40 or 45) can only be corrected
with bifocal or multifocal lenses.
Advantages
of contact lenses.
Widening of the field of vision because it is not limited by frames.
Little alteration in the real dimensions of an object seen by a
person. In cases of anisometropia (important differences in graduation
between one eye and another), contact lenses are the only way of
graduating both eyes with their full refraction. Absence of reflections
and aberrations caused by rain, etc. or steaming up because of changes
in outside temperature, as happens with the lenses of glasses.
Types of
contact lenses.
Lenses permeable to oxygen: these are the lenses to choose when
an almost free flow of oxygen is required and in cases of serious
astigmatism.
Hydrophilic (soft) lenses:
-for prolonged wear: these are suitable for patients who
need to wear them even while sleeping. They require more regular
checks by the ophthalmologist.
-for daily use: in this group there are various types, from
those that last one or two years to disposable ones (for a day,
a month, three months, etc.)..
The choice of the suitable type of lens depends on various aspects
evaluated by the ophthalmologist.
