Tired eyesight
and screen work.
Bad posture
when using computer screens encourages the evaporation of tears
and may lead to ocular drying, the main cause of tired and irritated
eyes.
A position looking
slightly upwards towards the screen obliges you to keep your eyelids
wide open, that is, to open your eyes excessively. Continuously
maintaining attention on the screen involves a reduction in the
frequency and extent of blinking.
The greater
eye surface area exposed and the reduction in blinking leads to
a reduction in tear secretion and, in consequence, an increase in
eye irritation or tired eyesight.
Environment.
-Preferably indirect, low intensity lighting.
-Avoid reflections from windows and from blinds with horizontal
strips.
-Choose matt finish furniture and wall paint to prevent reflections.
-Locate your work station at right angles to the window.
Organisation.
You must take breaks when using screens (15 minutes every two hours),
changing position and walking around from time to time. Alternate
with tasks that do not require the computer. Look at something in
the distance for 10 or 15 seconds from time to time to relax the
muscles that allow us to adapt. As blinking reduces with attention
and tears evaporate more easily, it is advisable to blink deliberately
from time to time, at least every 5 minutes. Put the screen in a
low position in relation to the user, at an angle of 30°. The distance
from the eye to the screen must be between 50 and 70 cm. Use a high
quality screen in terms of resolution and contrast. If it is not
possible to reduce the surrounding light or to use curtains that
reduce glare you can use anti-reflection filters on the screen.
Personal
care.
It is advisable that people who work with display screens, if they
have problems, should go to see an ophthalmologist for a check-up
or so he can indicate the appropriate refractive correction and
assess convergence and adaptation. In addition, many screen users
who have dry eyes may benefit from the prescription of the ocular
hydration agent most suitable for them.
