AIM
OF THE OPERATION.
The aim of this action is to end dependency on glasses or contact
lenses totally or partially, reducing the refractive defect (myopia,
hypermetropia or astigmatism) as far as possible so that uncorrected
postoperative eyesight should be the same as preoperative eyesight
with correction. It is important to understand that postoperative
eyesight better than that a person had previously with glasses or
contact lenses is impossible.
LASIK
TECHNIQUE.
Briefly,
the LASIK technique consists, more or less, of the following: After
anaesthetising the eye surface with anaesthetic drops, a device
is fitted to keep the eyes properly open. Then, using a microkeratome,
a flap of a predetermined thickness is cut from the cornea and it
is opened laterally. The next step is to apply the EXCIMER LASER
to the cornea, in the way required technically, depending on the
defect to be corrected (this phase usually takes less than a minute).
After applying the LASER, the surface corneal flap previously opened
is put back in place. After checking that the corneal flap is properly
stuck down, the device keeping the eye open is removed and the operation
is over. The patient has to be in the clinic waiting room for 30-60
minutes until, after the last examination, he or she is allowed
to go home.
